The web site hosting company is the company that rents you a specified amount of space to "host" your web site.  There are many companies that offer web site hosting. You will receive an Internet Protocol (IP) number from them, for example: 205.53.6.47.  This is your official internet address for your web site. 

The cost of a basic site is currently around $24.95 a month, although there are companies that offer lower priced basic hosting, they often strip the features to give you the lower price.  Beware of these.  If you are going to have a heavily developed e-commerce  site the fee will be higher, ranging from $49.95 to $599.95 a month.
